Join Extension Specialist Liz Driscoll for a fun day of learning outside here at the Eastern 4-H Center.
Liz will be presenting two NC 4-H curriculum training workshops for educators on March 21, 2023. This day of curriculum training is $12 which includes lunch and materials.
The World of Turfgrass: 9:00 a.m. – 12:00 pm
Do you love to sink your toes into a patch of soft turf? Maybe you like nailing a corner kick on a grassy soccer field for a chance to score a goal. Turfgrass is all around us, on our sports fields, lawns, and school grounds and it provides a rich context for youth to explore concepts of populations and ecosystems, and structures and functions of living things. Come try out this fun, new 4-H curriculum that offers interactive and engaging lessons that will generate student interest and understanding in the fundamentals of turfgrass production and management, turfgrass biology and life cycles, the interaction of turfgrass with environmental factors, and the positive impacts turf can have on the environment.
Eco Tower: 1:00 – 4:30 p.m.
Please join us for a hands-on exploration of ecology concepts that can be used for engaging environmental youth programs.
What happens if you leave a pile of leaves or logs to rot in your yard? What happens if you rake them up? The Eco Tower is a teaching tool that asks young people to explore the questions of human activities and the environment. Modeled after the game, Jenga, youth pull a game piece from the Eco Tower that poses a question of ecosystem resilience and builds youth critical thinking around topics of soil systems, native plants, and agriculture cultivation, insect and other animal organisms, fresh and maritime waters. Easily integrated into existing programs, this fun, interactive workshop is just in time for spring and summer youth programs! Dress for outdoor adventures and activities and be ready for fun!
